Areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) are areas that have been deemed to have such a unique natural beauty that they are a national asset. It is therefore in the nation’s interest to safeguard them. AONBs are, however, living landscapes. They have been shaped by both nature and human activity in the past and with careful guidance, will continue to be in the future.
The purpose of designating an area as an AONB is to help conserve and enhance the natural beauty. Social and economic development that contributes to this is encouraged as is the good management of recreation and tourism.
49 AONBs have been created across England, Wales and Northern Ireland under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. The Lincolnshire Wolds are one of them.
