Sustainability, Climate Change and Environment Consultation and Engagement

Why we think Climate Change and Protecting our Environment are important

West Lindsey District Council is taking strong action in responding to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Special Report, ‘Global Warming of 1.5°C’, October 2018. This report said that unless emergency action is taken global warming will likely reach 3°C with disastrous consequences.

In a report to council in November 2019 we recognised that whilst lots of good work and progress on climate change and enhancing our environment have been achieved, much more needs to be done. Further targets and actions were agreed including:

  • Reducing our own carbon emissions to net zero by 2050
  • Investigating further ways to make the whole district net-zero carbon by 2050
  • Developing a new strategy on Sustainability, Climate Change and the Environment

Developing our plans

You can see that we are making good progress on reducing our carbon footprint and work is continuing on our existing carbon reduction projects and updating our Carbon Management Plan.

In May 2020 we produced an update report highlighting a range of exciting measures being developed to help build the Draft Sustainability, Climate Change and the Environment Strategy.

You may have seen some of the work we’ve been doing already; this summer we carried out a wide range of consultation activities. This included talking to our own staff, the public and other stakeholders. We conducted an online public survey, and targeted surveys for young people and other special interest groups. We also posted on our website and social media channels.

During our consultation so far we continuously asked:

  1. What does the council need to consider doing to achieve its targets?
  2. What could the district as a whole, individuals and people working in partnership do?
  3. What should we do to lobby or influence?

We’ve taken opinions on the range of potential projects, measures and opportunities highlighted in the Draft Sustainability, Climate Change and the Environment Strategy. A short summary leaflet is also available.

Getting Your Views

We now want to ask our residents, which of the above are the most important and is there anything missing? Are we going far enough and fast enough? Your opinion will then be used to help us write our final, more detailed action plan.

Please access the survey once you have read the draft strategy.
