Air quality and smoke control

The UK Government has placed a duty on local authorities to periodically review and assess the air quality within their areas.

There are no laws against having a bonfire, but there are laws for the nuisance they can cause.

The Clean Air Act 1993 introduced a wide range of regulations which include the control of smoke emissions, the height of chimneys and the content and composition of motor fuels.

If your chimney releases smoke in a smoke control area, you may have to pay a penalty of up to £300.

Part IV of the Environment Act, 1995, places a statutory duty on local authorities to periodically review and assess the air quality within their area.
