Carbon Management

It is vital that the council manages the risks and opportunities related to climate change for example by controlling carbon emissions from our own operations. Reducing carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050 is part of the fight against climate change and a priority for West Lindsey District Council.

It is about getting our own house in order and leading by example. If we do not monitor and manage its energy usage and subsequent carbon emissions then both are likely to increase year on year subjecting us to ever increasing fuel costs and potentially carbon taxes. By reducing our energy consumption we also reduce our carbon emissions making a positive contribution to the environment and limiting our vulnerability to rising fuel costs.

We have reduced our carbon emissions by over a third in the last ten years. We have worked through two Carbon Management Plans and have recently published our third such plan which runs from 2021 to 2026.

To produce its latest plan we have worked closely with the Carbon Trust to re-calculate our carbon emissions and to identify key areas to focus on to reduce emissions further. These include council buildings, transport and leisure centres. The Carbon Management Plan takes a strategic approach to understanding our carbon emissions corporately, and will help us to prioritise the most effective actions.

The Carbon Management Plan is incorporated into our overall Sustainability, Climate Change and Environment Strategy action plan. Progress will be overseen by members and officers and will reported annually.
