Safeguarding children, young people and adults

Safeguarding is the action we take to promote the welfare of children and adults at risk.

What to look out for

These are some of the signs which may indicate an adult at risk or child is being abused.

  • bruises, pressure marks, broken bones, abrasions and burns can all be indications of physical abuse, neglect or mistreatment
  • unexplained withdrawal from normal activities, a sudden change in alertness and unusual depression can signify emotional abuse
  • sudden changes in financial situation may be the result of exploitation
  • bedsores, poor hygiene and unusual weight loss are indicators of possible neglect

All West Lindsey District Council staff are safeguarding trained. If you have concerns, we have a specialist Safeguarding Team who you can contact.

Do not ignore concerns you may have. You can call West Lindsey District Council confidentially for advice or assistance.

Domestic abuse

Sometimes you will hear the phrase domestic abuse, sometimes domestic violence. They mean the same thing. Domestic abuse encompasses a range of abusive behaviours which are used by an abusive partner (or ex-partner) to maintain power and control over you. Domestic abuse is not just a disagreement. It can also affect anyone, regardless of age, social background, gender, religion, sexual preference or ethnicity. Visit Lincolnshire County Council: Domestic Abuse for more advice and support.

What happens next?

Specialist staff will respond to these referrals carrying out a careful and sensitive enquiry, considering the following factors:

  • vulnerability
  • nature and extent of alleged abuse
  • duration of alleged abuse
  • impact upon the individual
  • repeated or serious acts of abuse against this or other vulnerable adults

How this enquiry progresses will be dependent on the seriousness of abuse and the wishes of the individual. Information and advice will be offered regarding practical help and courses of action available. If the person is unable to make an informed choice, care will be taken to support and protect them.
