Food poisoning and infectious diseases

Public Health England, GP’s and laboratories are obliged to notify the Food Safety team of any positive diagnoses of reportable infectious diseases they come across such as the following:

  • causes of food poisoning (such as Campylobacter, E.coli, Gastrointestinal infections, Salmonella)
  • dysentery
  • cryptosporidiosis
  • giardiasis
  • hepatitis A

In every case the patient is contacted in order to confirm the facts and to establish how and where the infection occurred. Our Food Safety officers will carry out an investigation where there has been a large outbreak of an infectious disease or food poisoning which in some cases may involve taking action to close an unsatisfactory food premise.

There are many potential sources of infectious diseases other than food. Illness can also be caused by poor hygiene practices (such as not washing hands before cooking or eating) after contact with:

  • animals
  • contaminated water
  • gardening
  • occupational exposure
  • contact with other people carrying the disease

Cooling Tower Registration

The primary purpose of cooling tower and condenser notification is ensure that the relevant enforcing authority can be satisfied that suitable control measures are in place to protect employees and the general public from the risk of infection by organisms such as legionella.

Cooling Tower Notifications are regulated by the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.
