Council Tax discounts and exemptions

The full council tax bill assumes there are two or more adults living in a property.  You may be entitled to a reduction in the council tax if you or your property fulfils certain criteria.


  • AnnexesAs from 1 April 2014 a new Council Tax discount of 50% was introduced for annexes that are being lived in by a family member and are not exempt.
  • Council Tax Empty Property ChargesFrom 1st April 2013, the government abolished the exemption previously given for properties undergoing structural alteration or repair
  • DiscountsYou may be able to get a discount or, in some cases, a full exemption if no-one lives in the property.
  • Exemptions for empty propertiesCouncil tax is not generally paid on any of the classes of property listed below because they are exempt.
