Selective Licensing Consultation

West Lindsey District Council is launching a consultation on proposals to change how some private rented homes are managed and licensed. The plans will affect private rented homes in several areas across the district. The council is keen to receive feedback on the proposals from people in all communities in the region, regardless of whether you own, rent, or live near a private rented home.

The council is committed to improving the quality of housing across the district; in addition to continuing to build thriving, prosperous communities. This consultation is part of the council’s long-term vision to address the inequalities that exist in housing in our communities. With more residents living in private rented homes than ever before, it’s important that as many people as possible share their views and experiences. The 12-week consultation opens on 17 January and will help to shape the direction the Council plans will take.

Since 2016, significant action has been taken to tackle poor housing standards and management of homes under the Selective Licensing scheme. The previous scheme was restricted to a small part of Gainsborough South-West ward with high levels of antisocial behaviour (ASB) and poor property conditions. The council now wants to expand the licensing area so that more tenants can be helped, and all residents can live in safe neighbourhoods.

Cllr Owen Bierley, Chair of the Council’s Prosperous Communities Committee, said: “We are doing everything possible to make sure that private renting offers the highest possible standards of security, safety and quality. Our previous Selective Licensing scheme addressed more than 4,000 hazards in homes across Gainsborough; but there is still more to do. We are now looking to take this further with proposals for new Selective Licensing schemes covering a larger area of the district.

“If you own a private rented home, are renting in private rented accommodation, or live near a private rented home, I encourage you to review our proposals and see what we’re doing to improve your local community.”

West Lindsey District Council is consulting about a new licensing scheme which, if introduced, would come into effect from September 2022.

The consultation runs until Monday 11 April 2022 and everyone can share their views by visiting Selective Licensing Consultation.
