ALL ABOARD – new hourly, week day train service praised by train enthusiast as perfect way to catch up with friends.
Richard Allsop (78) of Worksop, secured his ticket to ride, in order to meet up with his friend Sheila Bailey (75) of Beckingham.
He was among the first passengers to use the new Northern Rail service to Gainsborough Central Station and he was impressed with what he saw.
Richard, who is a member of the Friends of Worksop Station said: “I have used the train to see my friend Sheila and we can now use the service for meeting up in Gainsborough or Worksop.
“The new service is a very good thing for Gainsborough and the rail community, especially for Northern Rail. I think there are more trains running from Gainsborough than there ever were. An hourly service is pretty good and I am pleased to see the new shelters and station improvements.”
As previously reported, for the first time since 1993, an hourly week day service has returned to Gainsborough Central Station.
The service serves Sheffield, Worksop and Retford before arriving in Gainsborough. The station is situated right in the heart of Gainsborough, just round the corner from the award winning Marshall’s Yard – making it the perfect way for visitors to make a shopping trip in Gainsborough.
The station has also seen a number of improvements over the last few months including: a new shelter, seating, signage, painting and planters. This has been possible thanks to investment from Northern Trains, Lincolnshire County Council, West Lindsey District Council and North Notts & Lincs Community Rail Partnership.
Cllr Steve England, Chairman of West Lindsey District Council said: “This new service at Gainsborough Central Station is another catalyst for our town centre regeneration. This service has been possible because of collaboration and community leadership. Through joint working we’ve created further opportunity for people to discover our wonderful town.”
