Traders at Gainsborough’s market received high praise from shoppers who described them as ‘friendly and knowledgeable’.

As part of Love Your Local Markets fortnight –West Lindsey District Council challenged shoppers to tell us what they love about their local market.

One lucky winner, bagged a hamper full of goodies donated by the traders themselves.

Rocio Ruiz Rivadeneyra (22) from Gainsborough was delighted with her prize.

Her entry into the competition read: “I love my local market because it provides me with the opportunity to enjoy fresh local produce at excellent prices and with an outstanding service from friendly and knowledgeable traders.”

The comment was one of many that was posted into a ballot box and selected at random.

Miss Rivadeneyra said she felt very ‘lucky’ that she had won the prize. She said: “When I received the email telling me I had won I couldn’t believe it. My parents and I are very grateful to everyone that helped with this project, and we feel glad that local markets are being promoted, since they are at the core of our communities, especially Gainsborough’s.

“Thank you to everyone that was behind this project and collaborated to make it happen. It has been a great experience for me and my family and we couldn’t be happier to live in Gainsborough.”

The prize included:

  • A fruit basket from Flynn’s Fruit and Veg stall
  • A selection of flowers from Chilvers’ stall
  • Fairy cakes from Easton’s Bakery stall
  • A voucher to redeem a tasty crab from Wayne’s Fish stall
  • A voucher to spend at Michelle’s Book stall
  • Plus many more items

Wayne Hill, who has been trading on Gainsborough Market for 20 years was delighted to contribute a voucher for a delicious Grimsby crab to the hamper.

He said: “I’m pleased to hear that the winner has been selected for the hamper, and I hope she enjoys her prize. It’s great to see young people shopping at the market. Thank you to all of our customers who support us at Gainsborough Market and if you are not a regular why not pop along and visit us.”

Cllr Judy Rainsforth, member for Gainsborough South West Ward, said: “The competition was a great way for us to see what people love about Gainsborough Market, and to give us an opportunity to speak with both shoppers and residents about what we are doing in and around the town. It is so nice to see the hamper be claimed by a young shopper, and I hope she will enjoy all of the lovely prizes she has won.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the traders for their generosity in donating items for the prize and I hope this will encourage more people to visit the local market.”
