An event showcasing employment opportunities, career guidance and training in Gainsborough was a success for employers and attendees alike.

Hosted by the Department for Work and Pensions and held at Gainsborough College, the event attracted over 150 local residents, with around 20 stall holders showcasing opportunities.

West Lindsey District Council is a member of the Skills Partnership, which sponsored the event.

Amanda Bouttell, Employment and Skills Lead at the Council, said: “It’s been great to see such a wide range of opportunities on offer for people within our district. We had a really great day with providers commenting on the levels of interest shown by participants.  I’d like to thank all those that came along to showcase their provision and we look forward to hearing how individuals progress.”

Visitors also had the opportunity to look around the local college which is home to initiatives such as Made in Gainsborough and Construction Careers.

Donna Moorhouse, Head of Sales and Recruitment for the college, said: “This is the first partnership event that’s been held at Gainsborough College, and it’s been really successful. We’ve given a lot of information and advice to people and I’m impressed by how popular it’s been.”

The event highlighted job vacancies, apprenticeships, work placements, traineeships, higher level qualifications, advice, guidance and volunteer/work experience opportunities available locally.

Speaking on behalf of the DWP, Customer Service Manager Mark Barker said: “The aim of the Employment and Skills Event was to provide a wide range of opportunities to the residents of West Lindsey, and the customers of the Gainsborough Jobcentre.  Individuals were supported by Jobcentre staff and volunteers so the event was welcoming to all easy to navigate.”

One employer in attendance at the event was Gainsborough’s new Restaurant and Bar, The Forge. As previously reported, the new restaurant is set to open within the Travelodge before Christmas.

Owner, Mette Robinson said “We’re looking for a full team of around 20 people for the Forge, and we’ve been working with the Council and the Job Centre to find suitable candidates for the available roles. By attending the event today, we’ve seen a lot of people face to face that have shown an interest in the jobs on offer. It’s very encouraging and we’re really looking forward to getting everything up and running. Keep an eye on social media for announcements about our opening!”
