If you know someone in your community who is a dedicated volunteer or goes out of their way to help others, this is your chance to nominate them for a special award.
West Lindsey District Council is excited to host the West Lindsey Community Awards 2019.
Community organisations and individual volunteers make a huge contribution to lives across the district, which is why the council is keen to recognise them at its 2019 Community Awards.
Chairman of the council and Community Awards panel member, Councillor Pat Mewis, explained the event gives special recognition, to the unsung superstars working across the district.
She said: “As Chairman of the Council, I am privileged to be invited to many events throughout the district. I come across many people in the community who volunteer their time and have a real passion for the places they live and work.
“The awards provide an opportunity to recognise these unsung superstars in our communities. “From befriending a lonely neighbour to running community groups, or from providing an art class for the elderly to health walks around the village.
“A lot of the time the work goes un-noticed but the contribution is valued and this is an opportunity for us to celebrate their achievements.”
Last year’s District Champion was presented to Lizzie Jordan who, for over ten years, has gone into schools and shared her story of living with HIV with children and young people. She has been helping to educate them about healthy relationships and keeping themselves well and safe.
She said “I felt really honoured and very shocked. This is a huge privilege. I am really proud of where I come from and to talk about my situation is a major honour to help people understand what happens when people live with HIV as not many people talk about it.”
This year, the council has introduced new award categories, to make it simpler for people to nominate.
New categories for 2019 are:
- Community Club or Group
Citizen of the Year
Young Citizen of the Year
Contribution to Sports
Contribution to Wellbeing
Contribution to Arts and Culture
- Good Neighbour
The deadline for nominations is 4.30pm on Friday 18 January 2019.
Winners and runners-up will be invited to a special ceremony on the evening of Wednesday 27 February 2019 at the Hemswell Court, Hemswell Cliff.
