Kickstart Scheme – plans to boost work placements across West Lindsey revealed

Working in partnership with other local organisations, West Lindsey District Council and SureStaff Recruitment have teamed up to help support local businesses to access the Government’s landmark Kickstart Scheme.

SureStaff has expressed an interest to run a scheme locally, which has been backed by West Lindsey District Council. If the agency is selected to run a scheme, it could provide 30, six-month, paid work placements for young people who are struggling to find work across the district.

Small and medium sized businesses are being asked to express an interest in registering for the scheme. In return, the businesses that sign up to the scheme would be supported by SureStaff, who would help create the new jobs for young people and help access the funding.

The scheme, which will run until December 2021, will be offered to anyone between the ages of 16-24, currently on Universal Credit, and who are seen as at risk of long-term unemployment.

Currently, there are 610 young people unemployed in the West Lindsey area and on Universal Credit. This is 10.6% of the working age population in the district, representing a higher rate than both regional and national figures of 8.4% and 9.8% respectively, and an increase of 67.1% over the last 12 months.

Cllr Owen Bierley, Deputy Leader of West Lindsey District Council said: “We are delighted to be able to support a scheme that offers support to those in the job market who are particularly vulnerable right now. This scheme would create real, concrete opportunities to get people the vital experience and training they need and they would be able to earn an income in the process.

“We know in our communities right now, there are a substantial number of young people desperate to get themselves out there, earning their own income, learning new skills, and making their own way in the world, and so we are thrilled to be able to support such an exciting initiative.”

Surestaff is a well-established, Gainsborough based company that has been supplying agency staff to local businesses, including the council, for years.

Ray Hall, Branch Manager of SureStaff Recruitment, said: “Being a recruiter over the last few months we have witnessed first-hand, the incredible challenges in the job market.

“Jobs are being applied for on a huge scale, and unfortunately that means the first to be impacted in the job market are those who, for no fault of their own, are yet to have any tangible experience on their CV.

“This scheme completely challenges that. Not only can young people gain exciting, real-life experience, skills and training, but they can also do so under the safety of a real wage.

“Our hope is that this six-month placement will lead on to a wave of youth employment in our area, which as we all know, will only lead to prospering and growth in the local economy, and in the local area generally.”

The Kickstart Scheme, has been set up by the government as part of the plan nationally to boost jobs and skills. It is available to areas, or cohorts, who can show they have a minimum of 30 employers engaged with the scheme. Training, equipment and wages will all then be fully funded by the government, for candidates to work 25 hours a week.
