Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections are happening this May. In anticipation of the elections, here’s a few things you might not have known about PCCs.
Marc Jones was elected to the role of Lincolnshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner in 2016 and has spent three years dedicated to modernizing Lincolnshire Police, providing the best possible services for victims and ensuring the voice of the county’s residents are heard when policing priorities are set.
The role of PCCs were first introduced in 2012 and Mr Jones is the second incumbent. But how much do you know about PCCs and the work done over the last three years to keep your communities safe?

Did you know?
- The first ‘version’ of a PCC was introduced by Robert Peel in 1829 alongside the start of the modern police force.
- The current PCC role was introduced in 2012, it replaced a largely unknown committee of 15 people none of whom were directly accountable for policing or crime - saving £170k a year for frontline policing
- PCC responsible for commissioning victim services for the county and spends over £1m a year – with most coming from the Ministry of Justice, ensuring local victims of crime get the care they need.
- The Police Force doesn’t have a bank account. The budget to spend the £126m on policing in Lincolnshire a year is set and managed by the Office of Police and Crime Commissioner.
- Investment by the PCC for police to operate in rural areas – such as 4x4s, all-terrain vehicles and night vision goggles has resulted in improved police for rural areas, reducing rural crime by around 2000 in just two years.
- Lincs PCC has been successful in bidding for millions in additional national funding for policing, victim care and to tackle domestic abuse. Most recently PCC Jones secured an extra £1.8m from the Government to invest boosting police officer numbers.
- PCCs recruit then hold to account the Chief Constable for keeping us all safe.
- The PCC attends more than 200 events across the county every year – and responds to around 1,300 piece of correspondence sent annually to his office.
- The PCC has taken a lead role in establishing the UK’s first ever operational Station involving all three emergency services. The project attracted over £7m of national Government funding and will save over £500,000 a year in running costs.
- Lincolnshire Police’s first ever drone unit was established with money provided by the PCC. The squad is used to manage large crowded areas, search for missing people, gather evidence and track criminals.
- The PCC role is the only elected role that all residents across the county get to vote for, making it the most democratically accountable role in Lincolnshire.
- The PCC has installed a host of green energy technology across the force’s estate including LED lighting, solar panels and electric cars. In the last five years the force has cut its CO2 emissions by one fifth and the new lighting alone saves around £160,000 a year.
