Employment and Skills

We are committed to developing employment opportunities and skills levels across the district. We work with employers and local training providers to ensure the residents of West Lindsey have access to expert careers advice, job search support and assistance to gain the required skills and experience.

Support is available to help employers recruit staff and access to advice for enhancing the qualifications and performance of their workforce through a range of initiatives.

Traineeships

A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that unlocks the great potential of young people and prepares them for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’.

Designed to help young people aged 16 to 24 who don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience, traineeships provide the essential work preparation training, English, Math’s and work experience needed to secure an apprenticeship or employment.

For more information on traineeships visit: gov.uk's web page for traineeships

Apprenticeships

Combines practical training in a job with study. Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16. Apprentices can expect to:

  • work alongside experienced staff
  • gain job-specific skills
  • earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • get time for study related to the role (usually one day a week)

Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level.

Below are the key steps for an employer wishing to take on an Apprentice:

Made in Gainsborough

An Engineering Apprenticeship Programme has been developed in collaboration with Gainsborough Engineering businesses, Gainsborough College and West Lindsey District Council.  The initiative provides a number of Apprenticeship opportunities with training and assessment delivered by the College. Employers such as AMP Rose and Eminox are participating in the project.

Apprenticeship vacancies are advertised on the National Apprenticeship website and recruitment is managed by the College and the employers.

If you are an employer and would like to learn more about this initiative please contact the Communities Team at WLDC: communities@west-lindsey.gov.uk

If you are an individual and would like more information about the employers involved in this project please see the Made in Gainsborough brochure [pdf / 5.6 MB].

Internships

An internship is a period of work experience, offered by an organisation and usually lasting for a fixed/limited period of time. They are typically undertaken by students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field.

Employers frequently use these placements to assess a student's or graduate's capability and often recruit employees from their interns rather than advertising their vacancies externally.

Across West Lindsey there is an abundance of national and international businesses that are the leading industry experts in their sector and they offer a number of exciting career opportunities.

West Lindsey District Council is working closely with businesses and higher education providers to showcase what is available to prospective graduates and those with higher education and skill levels. Some of our businesses have been at the forefront of technological advancement, skill progression and employee welfare.

If you are looking to take your career further and would like more information please see our Higher Skills Brochure [pdf / 6.3 MB].
