General Election 2024

A General Election has now been called and will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024. There will be a choice of candidates in each constituency, and some will be the local candidates for national political parties. The candidate that receives the most votes will become the new Member of Parliament (MP) for that constituency.

Following the conclusion of the Boundary Review in 2023 the whole of the area administered by West Lindsey combined forms the Gainsborough County Constituency.

Nominations

Prospective candidates can submit nomination papers on any working day between Tuesday 4 June 2024 and Friday 7 June 2024 (10am to 4pm).

Close of nominations

The deadline to submit nomination papers is 4pm on Friday 7 June 2024.

Register to vote

The deadline to register is midnight on Tuesday 18 June 2024. Visit the Gov.uk website to register.

Apply to vote by post

The deadline for receipt of new applications is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.  This deadline is also for cancellations and amendments of all current postal and proxy votes.

Apply to vote by proxy

The deadline for receipt of new applications is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.  You can apply online for some forms of proxy vote, including for a specific election at website.

Poll cards

Poll cards will be issued to all registered electors as soon as possible after the Notice of Election has been published.

If you have not received a card by the second week of June it may mean you are not registered. If you have moved in the last few months you need to ensure you have re-registered at your new address. Please phone Electoral Registration on 01427 676576 if you have not received a poll card or if you are not sure if you are registered to vote at your current address.

Postal votes

Important Information

If you applied for a postal vote before 30 May 2024 – your postal vote should arrive between 19 June and 23 June.

If your applied for a postal vote after the 31 May 2024 – Your postal vote should arrive between 27 June and 30 June.

If you will be on holiday or away from home when your postal vote arrives – you will need to apply for a proxy vote.

To apply for a Proxy Vote, you will need to cancel your postal vote by 5pm on the 19 June.

If you usually receive a postal vote, you will receive a postal poll card before the postal vote pack.

Postal votes will be issued as soon as possible after the close of nominations and are sent by first class post. However, please note that if you apply close to the postal vote deadline your postal vote pack may not be posted until the Friday before polling week.

For this election if you hand deliver any postal vote, including your own, to a polling station or the West Lindsey District Council office in Gainsborough, you will be required to complete a prescribed form. Any postal votes delivered without the completed prescribed form will be rejected.

Postal votes can be accepted at the West Lindsey District Council office in Gainsborough during office opening hours only.

You will not be able to put any postal votes through the council office letterbox as they will be rejected.

Proxy Voting

If you have appointed a proxy to vote on your behalf at your allocated polling station, your proxy will be sent a poll card.

If you wish to appoint a proxy please note that there are new limits, please visit our Proxy Voting webpage for more information.

Voting in person

There have been some changes to polling station locations since the last General Election was held. Your poll card will tell you which polling station you need to go to. 

Voter ID in polling Stations

All voters at a polling station will need to show an accepted form of photographic identification (photo ID) in order to be able to cast their vote. More information can be found about Voter ID on our Voter ID at elections Webpage.

If you do not have any of the accepted forms of ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate on the GOV.UK website by 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024. A Voter Authority Certificate is a free photographic identification document specific for the purposes of voting.
