West Lindsey District Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting local communities, stating that district councils are best placed to serve residents effectively. However, the council recognises the importance of being actively involved in discussions on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).
Councillors attended an Extraordinary Council meeting tonight, (Tuesday 18 March) to discuss the options available.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Trevor Young said:
“We have always been clear that district councils are best placed to support their local communities. However, it’s important we are actively involved in discussions about local government reorganisation to ensure the best possible outcome for our residents.
"Therefore, we will engage constructively to ensure any future arrangements support local services, enhance democratic representation, and deliver real benefits for the people and businesses of West Lindsey."
A White Paper published in December last year asked district/borough and county councils across England to submit their initial LGR proposals by Friday, March 21 with a more detailed plan submitted by November 2025.
The Government wants to replace the current system of counties and districts with unitary authorities to complement the newly devolved Greater Lincolnshire Mayoral Combined County Authority.
West Lindsey District Council will submit all published options for reorganisation to the government, with a preference for Options A and E.
