As part of ongoing efforts to bolster community resilience and safety, West Lindsey District Council has teamed up with Lincolnshire County Council to launch a flood preparedness campaign.

With a focus on proactive education and preparedness, this initiative aims to empower residents to mitigate the risks associated with flooding. It will also enhance their ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

A flooding postcard will be delivered to every home in the district along with the waste calendars over the next two weeks. The flood information is a practical guide for residents on where to go for help in case of a flood. It also details what to pack in an overnight bag and where to go for advice and information.

Councillor Stephen Bunney, Chair of West Lindsey District Council’s Environment, Sustainability and Climate Working Group, knows all too well the impact flooding can have on the community, particularly in Market Rasen and surrounding villages.

He said:

“I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact flooding can have on our community, witnessing the devastation it leaves in its wake. It’s a stark reminder of the need to be prepared. As a district council, we understand the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding our community against the impacts of flooding. With the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns and the heightened risk of flooding, it is crucial for our community to be well-prepared.

“Through this campaign, we are committed to providing residents with the tools and knowledge the need to prepare for and respond to flood events. Ultimately, we are looking to enhance community safety and resilience and ensuring our community is equipped to face these challenges together.”

Together West Lindsey District Council, Lincolnshire County Council and the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum will be sharing tips, information on what to do in case of a flood.

Cllr Bunney said the campaign will also its website and social media platforms to reach residents. He said:

“We do not just want to disseminate information; we want to engage with communities in proactive flood prevention and preparedness measure. I would urge residents across the district to get involved and know what to do in a flooding emergency and encourage people to follow the council's social media channels and that of the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum.”

Cllr Colin Davie, executive councillor for environment at Lincolnshire County Council, said:

“Flooding is one of the biggest identified risks to Lincolnshire, and many communities across West Lindsey and the county know first-hand the devastating impact that flooding can have on homes and businesses. That’s why it’s so important that every person and every community has the information and the tools to be best prepared and know what to do if the worst happens.

“Whilst councils and other public agencies work together create their own emergency plans and support our communities, as we move into the winter season, with the effects of Storms Babet and Henk still fresh in so many minds, we’re urging residents to sign up for flood alerts and take practical steps to protect their families and homes.”

Residents are encouraged to sign up to free sea/river flood warnings by visiting: www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings or calling: 0345 988 1188.

Please remember that during emergencies residents are advised to always follow the advice of the emergency services.
