A smarter way to report damaged or full public litter and dog bins across West Lindsey

It’s now easier to report a full or damage litter or dog waste bin thanks to new smart phone technology implemented by West Lindsey District Council.

New labels with a scannable QR code and unique numbers are being placed on litter and dog waste bins across the district, where practically possible.

Residents can use their phone camera or a QR code scanner app on their smart phone to scan the sticker, which will allow them to report full or damaged bins. For residents without a smartphone, they can still contact the council to report an issue in the usual way by reporting an issue on our website at West Lindsey District Council or by calling Customer Services on 01427 676676.

These QR code stickers will be gradually rolled out across the district over the next few months.

The idea for the bin stickers was first suggested by district councillor Ian Fleetwood, who raised it at Full Council in November 2023.

Cllr Fleetwood said:

“It was brought to my attention that some litter and dog bins were filling up very rapidly and that some were very full.  While it might appear very easy to ask that any bin is ‘requested to be emptied’, this can become a lot more cumbersome and complicated when trying to explain the location of that bin to the District Council who own and look after more than 1,700 bins in the district.”

Cllr Fleetwood said he was delighted to see the suggestion has been taken on board by the Council and is being rolled out across the whole district. He added:

“Most of us take our phones when we are out walking whether it is out exercising dogs, a walk to the shops or walking for health benefits. By using the technology available to us, we are now able to report issues more effectively.

“The new system will help to keep the area looking tidier and from a health perspective it will help keep the area cleaner. From a management angle the entire system would become easier to maintain as well as being easier for our street cleaning staff to locate the reported bins and deal with them more efficiently.”

Where practical, QR codes will be attached to public waste bins owned by the Council, creating a live link to the ‘Report it’ section of the Council’s website, enabling dog walkers and residents to report any problems direct, when they are out and about.

Simply scan the QR code on your Smartphone camera, click on the link that comes up and fill in the short form to report any issues. Please include the number on the QR code sticker as this corresponds to the individual bin.

For those that do not have a smart phone, a telephone number will be on the sticker linking back to Customer Services. People can report the issues and quote the asset number of the bin printed on the sticker to identify its location easily.
