That is the message form the Council’s people and organisation development manager Emma Redwood as we mark International Women’s Day.
Emma started her working life as a trainee Accounts Assistant in a manufacturing company. At that time maternity leave was only offered for 12 weeks, which now seems almost unthinkable.
Emma advises the Council on recruitment opportunities, law and development of individuals and she is pleased to have seen improvements to maternity leave nationally, over the years.
She said: “I am pleased to see over time entitlement has been increased and some of my colleagues now benefit from much more progressive maternity rights.
“However, we can always challenge ourselves to do more, whether that is from a position of leadership or ensuring that any return from maternity leave is handled sensitively within our own teams. This is something I hope I have been able to do within my own role to support colleagues and I have seen the positive impacts this has had on people returning to work and feeling very much valued.”
