Cookies

What is a Cookie?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer by websites that you visit. Cookies are used to remember your settings when you revisit a website and to identify how visitors navigate the site. Cookies provide valuable information to website owners to adapt and make changes to the site in order to improve the user experience.

Why we use cookies

In common with many websites we use a number of different types of cookies to help improve your experience of using our website, specifically by:

  • Remembering preferences you have previously indicated to us.
  • Ensuring we know when you are logged in and logging you out automatically after a period of time to protect you against misuse.
  • Understanding how many people have visited our website, the search terms they are using and the journeys they make in order to locate content.
  • To provide additional functionality, typically via third party tools, to enhance the website

We do not use the information captured for any other purpose.

How do I control what cookies are used?

You can change your cookie preferences at any time by clicking on the ‘C’ icon, or opening up the Cookies Panel.

You can then adjust the available sliders to ‘On’ or ‘Off’, then clicking ‘Save and close’, or you can choose to accept the recommended setting. You may need to refresh your page for your settings to take effect.

Alternatively, most web browsers allow some control of most cookies through the browser settings. Find out more about how to manage cookies on the Information Commissioner's Office website.

You can opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics across all websites by visiting this page on Google.

Youtube

On some parts of this site, we use YouTube to display videos. We embed videos using YouTube's privacy enhanced mode, which only sets cookies once you play the video. YouTube will not store personally identifiable cookie information. Read more at YouTube's embedding videos information page. You can also read YouTube’s Privacy Policy.

HotJar

We use Hotjar in order to better understand our users’ needs and to optimize this service and experience. Hotjar is a technology service that helps us better understand our users’ experience (e.g. how much time they spend on which pages, which links they choose to click, what users do and don’t like, etc.) and this enables us to build and maintain our service with user feedback. Hotjar uses cookies and other technologies to collect data on our users’ behaviour and their devices. This includes a device's IP address (processed during your session and stored in a de-identified form), device screen size, device type (unique device identifiers), browser information, geographic location (country only), and the preferred language used to display our website. Hotjar stores this information on our behalf in a pseudonymized user profile. Hotjar is contractually forbidden to sell any of the data collected on our behalf. For further details, please see the ‘about Hotjar’ section of Hotjar’s support site.

HotJar test cookie  hjTLDTest When the Hotjar script executes we try to determine the most generic cookie path we should use, instead of the page hostname.
