This is a government funded scheme to support vulnerable households in England.  This funding is for additional support to be paid to those already in receipt of Council Tax support.

When will it be paid?

This scheme is for 2023 to 2024 financial year and will be paid as a one off payment on annual council tax bills issued in March 2023.

How much will I receive?

The award will be an initial reduction of £25 with a further additional payment of up to £25. If your liability for 2023 to 2024 totals less than £50 you will receive an amount that reduces your balance down to NIL. No one will receive a refund for this reduction being awarded.

Who qualifies for this payment?

Working age and pension age Local Council Tax Support claimants, with an outstanding Council Tax for 2023/24 will receive a reduction to their annual Council Tax bills.

Do I need to apply for this reduction?

No one will need to apply for a reduction under this scheme. We will assess eligibility for support and automatically apply the discount.

I do not pay anything now, will I still receive a payment?

No. If you do not pay council tax you will not receive an award.

What do you mean by working age?

The UK pension age is now 66 years old for both men and women. So anyone under that age is classed as working age.

Will this award affect my eligibility to other benefits?

No, it is not the government’s intention to affect eligibility to other benefits.

Do I have to pay the money back if I move house or lose my entitlement to local Council Tax support?

No.

You will not be required to pay this reduction back, although you will not be paid a refund if your account goes into credit due to the payment of this award .
