Elections - general information

Elections are a democratic process in which citizens over the age of 18 elect political or independent candidates to represent them and their interests locally (on the District, Parish and County Council), nationally (in Parliament) or internationally (in the European Parliament).

District and Parish Council Elections

The election of District Councillors is held once every four years on the first Thursday in May, namely 2015, 2019, 2023 etc. The election of Town and Parish Councillors takes place at the same time as that for the District Councillors.

County Council Elections

The election of Councillors to serve on the Lincolnshire County Council is held every fourth year on the first Thursday in May namely 2013, 2017, 2021.

In West Lindsey there are 10 divisions for the County Council, each represented by one councillor.

Parliamentary General Election

Parliamentary elections are held in response to Her Majesty the Queen dissolving Parliament and issuing a Writ to hold an election.  The maximum term of office of a Government is five years.  The last Parliamentary election was held on 6 May 2010.

The whole of the area administered by West Lindsey combined with one ward from East Lindsey District Council forms the Gainsborough Constituency.

European Parliamentary Elections

European Parliamentary elections are held every five years on a date which is determined by the Council of the European communities and takes place throughout Europe between Thursday and the following Sunday of the specified week.  The reason being that traditionally Member States vote on different days of the week, e.g. United Kingdom votes on Thursdays, Italy votes on Sundays.  Elections were last held on 4 June 2009.  West Lindsey is part of the East Midlands Region which is represented by five members of the European Parliament (MEP’s).
