Stow Minster
Dominating the village and a landmark for miles around, St Mary’s is not only the oldest, but probably the most impressive church in north-west Lincolnshire as well as one of the largest & oldest Parish churches in England.
According to legend the first church on the site was built as early as the 7th century to commemorate a visit by St. Etheldreda who was travelling from Northumberland to Ely. Her ash-wood staff, planted in the ground, is said to have miraculously burst into leaf to provide her with shelter.
The present great church, however, was originally built in about 975 by Bishop Aelfnorth to serve as the ‘head minster’ and was a major religious centre nearly two centuries before a cathedral was built at Lincoln.
