Food Safety

West Lindsey District Council is committed to ensuring that food and drink intended for human consumption, which is produced, stored, distributed, handled or consumed within the district is without risk to the health or safety of the consumer.

A small team of Environmental Health Officers and Technical Officers carries out this work. Work is allocated by the team manager.  When you contact the Food Team you will be directed to the appropriate officer.

There are currently about 750 registered food businesses in the district and the members of the Food Team inspect them all at regular intervals.

We also deal with food complaints. Some of these were about food produced locally and others about food produced by national and international companies.

We also took food samples last year, which were sent for microbiological testing. Most of these were taken on a random basis and were used to check that standards of food safety were being maintained.

The Food Team works with food businesses to achieve compliance with legislation through inspection, education and the provision of information. Where enforcement action is necessary, officers take appropriate action dependent on the seriousness of the breach of the law, guided by our Enforcement Policy

In the year 2009/2010 we achieved 100% of the programmed Food Safety inspections and we responded to all food complaints within the targeted response times.

The Trading Standards department at Lincolnshire County Council deals with labelling and compositional requirements.
