West Lindsey's Prevention of Fraud

Our aim is for the highest standards of public confidence and openness, probity, honesty, fairness and accountability in public life and the best use of public resources by adopting a zero tolerance approach to fraud, corruption and money laundering.

We will make sure that losses to fraud and corruption in all areas is at an absolute minimum, by working with County, regional and national partners, sharing information, best practice and resources.

To achieve this we will take action to: 

  • Reduce the potential for fraud and loss within the Council to an absolute minimum.
  • Protect the Council’s resources by ensuring that they are not lost through fraud but are used to improve services to West Lindsey residents.
  • Ensure that we operate according to best practice principles.

Objectives

  • To deter and prevent fraud and corruption through investigation, sanctions and redress.
  • To identify and manage risks of fraud and corruption within the Council and to proactively deter and prevent corruption and fraud.
  • To prioritise a work programme and action plan to minimise the impact and likelihood of the activities identified within the fraud risk register and employ the best practice principles.
  • To create a Counter Fraud culture which highlights the Council’s zero tolerance of fraud, corruption and theft which defines roles and responsibilities and actively engages everyone.
  • Take positive action to apply appropriate sanctions and recovery of losses.
  • To share information and intelligence and learn from cases that are investigated.
  • To ensure that our staff have the correct skills, training and support to carry out their functions.
  • To ensure an anti-fraud, theft and corruption culture amongst employees, councillors, partners and the public to report, act and deter such activity. 
  • To ensure that staff and members are aware of and confident in applying processes.
  • To ensure that local people, staff, members and partners are confident in applying the processes and able to raise issues that concern them.
