Council Services:

Benefit Fraud

Benefit fraud is not a victimless crime. Nationally it is estimated that as much as £2 billion of incorrect benefit is paid every year. This equates to approximately 5% of total benefit expenditure.

Overpayment attributed to housing and council tax benefit fraud nationally in 2009 was £1.1 billion. West Lindsey last year uncovered £175,000.00 of benefit fraud.

We are focused on tackling fraud with the staff in our Benefit Enquiry Unit conducting investigations and working closely with the Department of Work and Pensions and the Inland Revenue to route out costly benefit fraud.

We do not tolerate fraud.

It is important that fraud is detected and losses are reduced to ensure that benefit is only paid to those that are rightly entitled.

You can help us prevent fraud!
